Soima ble grunnlagt i Viseu, Portugal, i 1977 av Manuel Morais og hans forretningspartnere Agostinho Almeida og Serafim Faro, opprinnelig for å produsere en rekke anleggsutstyr, inkludert platevalsemaskiner, presser, traverskraner, mursteinslag og betongblandere.
